Lumumba

Both under Belgian colonial rule and since independence Congo has suffered greatly. It did not have to be that way. For one brief shining moment there was hope for Congo under the leadership of Patrice Lumumba. Then fifty two years ago today the US CIA and the Belgians successfully murdered Patrice Lumumba.

Browsing Google Maps, I just learned that there is a Patrice Lumumba Road in Accra, near the airport. I am sure that this is no great discovery to those who live in the country, but it was news to me.

A couple of Pan-African leaders from countries outside Ghana have streets named after them in Accra. There is also one named after Sankara. There are even some non-African leaders with roads named after them. For instance Josip Broz Tito.
