Lunch

Today I had kenkey and pepper for lunch at the Night Market. I passed on the dry fish. The flies seems to like the fish a bit too much and I definitely do not want to catch cholera. The kenkey and pepper cost me only 50 peswas (25 cents). So it is possible to find things even cheaper than Ramen noodles to eat. The big expense in all meals here seems to be the meat, chicken, or fish.

You might have covered this already somewhere, but would you mind writing a little more about what the Night Market is, exactly?

(I love these posts!)

The Night Market is on campus between my bank, the little store, the international hostels, and the guest center. It is basically stalls selling food, beverages, and some other necessities.

Why is it called the Night Market?

Because it is open at night. A lot of things close here when it gets dark a little before 7:00. I think the night market is open until 9:00 at night or so.

Okay, now what's "kenkey" and are Ghanian peppers more akin to bell ppeers or chile peppers?

J. Otto Pohl said...

Kenkey is fermented maize and peppers in Ghana are always hot.

Kenkey is fermented maize that is wrapped and made to boil for hours. The ones being sold at the night market are not hygienically prepared if you want to avoid cholera and I suggest you go to Odo Rise at Akuafo hall for your keney next time. Its a lil expensive there though...

Thanks Japhet I was not aware that Night Market was cholera risk. I have avoided it so far. I usually eat at the Balme Library Canteen, but it is closed on weekends.
