I wish Nkrumah had built a subway

I had to teach in Accra today. The class went well, but traffic as always was awful. There is not a day that goes by that I do not wish that Nkrumah had built a subway. Maybe if the clowns in the military had not overthrown him in 1966 he would have gotten around to building one. Then Ghana would be pretty close to a utopia.

Just read a long article in Newsweek (sept. 19) about witch hunts in Ghana. Womens are driven form their homes by accusations of sorcery and some seek refuge in "witch" camps. Belief in witchcraft is still endemic in northern Ghana near the border wtih Togo, says the author, Sophie Grove.

I have heard about this. There has been violence in the recent past against women accused of being witches. I have not been to the northeast which is quite remote from Legon. The Ghana I know is quite civilized and enlightened.
