Thank God for small favors

The more I read about the sheer stupidity of academics in universities in the White English speaking world the happier I am to be working at the University Ghana. There are a few exceptions like SOAS. But, for the most part the people working at universities in the US, UK, and Australia as faculty are absolutely horrible people. Nowhere else can one find such egotistical, thin skinned, blowhards.  I am not sure what went wrong, but the domination of the industry in the above countries by complete jerks does appear to be a major problem.

I'm afraid I have to concur. At least there are people like you, me, and a handful of others who are still normal.

I recently had an experience with a professional organization in which I encountered sheer viciousness on the part of people with advanced degrees. It was incredible.

Hey, you're asking too much from them. They are normal human beings, like to feel important, like everybody else.

No, Ghanaian academics don't act at all like most American, British, and Australian academics. If you encountered the kind of attitudes that dominate Anglo-American academia anywhere else you would be rightfully shocked. You would definitely complain to their manager.

I can see you never spent much time in DC -- particularly on Capitol Hill.

I lived in Alexandria, VA for over a year. I think American academics are a lot worse than politicians in these regards. If only because the stakes are so much lower and the attitudes so much worse among academics.
